Eclectic Performance Series

This is our adult entertainment. As a children's theatre we do most of our business in the daytime but we began hosting Theater Voices in the evenings and found an audience of adults eager for evening entertainment. We still had plenty of evenings free so the Eclectic Performance Series was born. The goal of the Eclectic Performance Series is to provide artists not yet established with a performance venue, and expand the boundaries of the arts in the Capital District. If you have a project in need of a performance space, e-mail us at info@steamer10theatre.org.

2011-2012 Season

Theater Voices presents Sight Unseen
February 17 & 18 at 8 pm and February 18 & 19 at 3 pm
Admission is FREE.

A fully staged reading of Sight Unseen, written by Donald Margulies, directed by John Romeo.
On a detour from a London retrospective of his work, a successful painter visits the lover he hasn’t seen for 15 years, where she lives in a Spartan farmhouse with her husband. This complex, subtly-constructed play by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies (Collected Stories, Dinner with Friends) ties together the story of a life-defining love affair with an artist's struggle to deal with his Jewish identity and the fact that fame has not made him immune to insecurity and a sense of having lost his way.

A World Premiere Evening with Righteous Babe Recording Artisit Hamell on Trial
February 25 at 8 pm
Righteous Babe Records' Ed Hamell a.k.a. Hamell On Trial is a one-man punk show bringing you (mostly) loud, fast music informed by politics, passion, energy, and intelligence, played by a guy with a sharp tongue and a wicked sense of humor. The new year launches Hamell into new territory, captivating audiences not only through his award-winning performances, but also a Kerouac-esque story of social commentary shaped by years on the road.
At the Steamer, Hamell will offer the world premiere of a new work, bound for Edinburgh Festival Fringe, based on his experiences as a bartender in Syracuse. Longtime fans have already heard some of these stories (“Big as Life”, “Crack Bar,”) but the as yet untitled performance piece will be Hamell’s most probing work yet. This performance contains frank language and adult situations and is not recommended for children.
Check out HamellTV.

Anti- Recording Artist Sean Rowe
March 17 at 8 pm

Troy native Sean Rowe made his bones playing open mics and opening slots around the Capital Region. Virtually everyone who saw him perform knew they’d one day say, ‘I knew him when...’ Rowe, who signed to Anti- Records (the home of similarly visionary artists like Tom Waits, Merle Haggard and Neko Case) in 2010, has spent the last year touring the world, dazzling international fans and drawing comparisons to the likes of Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen and Greg Brown. In February, he travels to Los Angeles to mix his latest album, which features contributions from Saratoga County’s impeccable indie powerhouse, Railbird. His St. Patrick’s Day date at the Steamer will mark the hometown debut of the new album’s songs. For more information about Sean, click here.

Theater Voices presents A Steady Rain
March 30 & 31 at 8 pm and March 31 & April 1 at 3 pm
Admission is FREE.

A fully staged reading of A Steady Rain, written by by Keith Huff, directed by David Girard.
Denny and Joey have been best friends since kindergarten, and after working together for several years as Chicago policemen, are practically family. But when a domestic disturbance call takes a turn for the worse, their friendship is put on the line, and veers into a moral gray area where trust and loyalty struggle for survival against a sobering backdrop of criminal lowlifes. This gritty, gripping noir tragedy opened on Broadway in 2009, starring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. Mature theme and language.

Rosanne Raneri - Bryan Thomas
April 14 at 8 pm
This is a rare pairing of two of the area’s most talented, yet most elusive artists. No single Capital Region performer has landed on more critics’ lists than Rosanne Raneri. Thomas - often recording by himself under a variety of assumed names and personages - has relentlessly fused rock, funk and pop in a bold, unique and sometimes enigmatic mix. Like Raneri, he is well-respected by his peers, loved by his fans and too infrequently seen on stage. This will be the first concert length theater performance by either artist in years.

Rosanne Raneri is a luminous, unforgettable, award-winning singer-songwriter who hypnotizes audiences and inspires reviewers to call her breathtaking, exciting, the best in New York's Capital Region, a star-in-waiting. One fellow singer-songwriter describes Rosanne Raneri's unique and arresting sound as “romantic, classic, erotic.” Her voice is gutsy and sensitive, penetrating, fluid and precise, husky and revealing; her lyrics have a distinct edge that respects the fragile and raw spectrum of emotion and experience while testing their boundaries. For more about Rosanne, click here.

Bryan Thomas is a soul rocker from New York’s capital city of Albany. According to Nippertown’s Greg Haymes “With Prince as his primary musical touchstone, Thomas’ uncompromising songs are specifically local, yet gloriously global. He writes smart, and he writes from the heart, balancing intellect, passion and politics.” Samples of Bryan’s music, video and poetry can be found online at his award-winning web site bryanthomas.com, and at TheHiddenCity.com, a webzine for underground arts in Albany, New York. Thomas is a founding member of the Hidden City collective.

Star Spangled Washboard Band with special guests Lonesome Val Haynes &Todd Nelson
April 21 at 8 pm
Few would argue that Blotto is the biggest band in Albany’s musical history. But before Blotto was Blotto, its key members made music as The Star Spangled Washboard Band -- offering a wild, woolly amalgam of jug band songs, vaudeville humor, tight harmonies and staggering technique as evinced by the group’s Flying Fish debut album, “Collector’s Item” (which is, now, indeed, a collector’s item). The SSWB’s sole reunion performance was a sold-out show at the Steamer in 1997, and every patron’s face was plastered with a smile. To make the evening even more interesting, Val Haynes & Todd Nelson, from the legendary Fear of Strangers, will open the show with an acoustic set. A fantastic reunion that you won't want to miss. Rosary Beard with special guests Winterpills
May 4 at 8 pm

Something special happens when two great musicians get together. On their own, Matthew Carefully (formerly of Kamikaze Hearts) and Hunter Sagehorn (currently with Alta Mira) create a wide array of sounds ranging from the treated-mandolin loops of Carefully’s “Kentucky” to the angular, rhythmically cryptic rock of Sagehorn’s band. But with Rosary Beard -- which made its debut at the famed Caffe Lena -- the duo strips things back to just two acoustic guitars, sitting knee to knee, weaving breathtaking melodies to and fro. It’s haunting, ethereal and fresh. At the Steamer, Rosary Beard will celebrate music from a new album being recorded this spring. Northampton's Winterpills will open the show with their unique blend of chamber pop.  Check out Rosary Beard at Facebook or go to the Winterpills web site.

Frank Jaklitsch & Friends
May 5 at 7 pm

He’s the song man. Whether writing his own classics or interpreting those of others, Frank Jaklitsch always find the true heart of a song and he conveys that to his audience with true passion. He is, in short, the best friend a song ever had. For his special concert performances, Jaklitsch selects both a charity and a theme, and his Steamer stop will provide equipment funds for a local school while focusing musically on themes of children and family. Check out Frank online!

Theater Voices presents Black Tie
May 18 & 19 at 8 pm and May 19 & 20 at 3 pm
Admission is FREE.

A fully staged reading of Black Tie, written by A. R. Gurney, directed by Judy Spevack.
Set in an Adirondacks hotel on the eve of a wedding, this engaging comedy explores the subset of humanity that Mr. Gurney has been writing about with warmth and humor throughout his career. "Black Tie" is insightful and touching in its depiction of a man welcoming back that ghost many of us have to banish consciously from our minds as we grow older, the voice of a parent (or grandparent) that becomes an internal barometer of the propriety of our behavior, whether we like it or not.
